Social Media Presence Key to Attracting Great Candidates

Hiring now or in the near future?  Don’t overlook the importance of social media.  In a new report compiled by Randstad and Think Resources (download free here):

  • 51% of all employees surveyed report they believe social media can help them find a job
  • 51% also say they would look on social media channels for information about a prospective employer when preparing for a job interview
  • 52% would look for information on social media to learn more about a company’s culture

Work, Life and Social Media

Not to say that the career or business uses of social media are in any way overtaking its more popular applications.  In regards to work, life and social media, Randstad’s Work Monitor survey  of over 400 employees also found that:

  • A majority (67%) are using social media only to follow family, friends, and acquaintances vs. for business reasons
  • Only 27% say they experience business benefits from social media
  • Only 14% prefer using Twitter over email to connect with colleagues
  • A majority (78%) report having a social media account
  • 62% report their employers do not provide access to social media sites

Engineers and Social Media

Though not in overwhelming numbers, Engineers are engaging social media when researching jobs, as well as taking advantage of it for business purposes according to Think Resources’ survey of over 700 engineers.

  • 36% of engineers polled noted that social media made them more productive at their job.
  • 42% report they use social media channels to communicate with managers or co-workers.
  • 26% of respondents say they use social media for work from one to four hours per week.
